Giving Back

At Manhard Consulting, we strive to create long-term relationships in the community.
That means being not just a good corporate citizen but also a good neighbor and friend to the business community, local residents, future engineers and others. We actively support our staff in donating their time and talents to this important mission.

Hurrican Harvey Relief Effort

Few severe weather events have hit as close to home as Hurricane Harvey.  With an office in Houston and staff and their families living in the affected area, our primary concern was with each and every one of them.  Gladly, we can report that all are safe!

As a show of support for our staff and the surrounding community, employees from offices across the US, matched by the Manhard Charitable Matching Program, raised over $12,000 in support of relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey.  Charities supported included:

  • American Red Cross
  • Americares
  • Catholic Charities of Galveston-Houston
  • Greater Houston Community Foundation
  • Houston Food Bank
  • Houston Relief Fund (JJ Watt Foundation)
  • Mission Northeast
  • Montgomery County Food Bank
  • Salvation Army of Houston
  • Samaritan’s Purse
  • SPCA of Texas

The beginnings of The Greenhouse Project

The Greenhouse Project

Located on the campus of Carson High School in Carson City, Nevada, The Greenhouse Project provides an educational base for students of all ages. Students learn the importance of sustainable living and how to grow their own foods and increase their knowledge of nutrition. All while enjoying the great outdoors! Ninety percent of the food grown at The Greenhouse is given to the under served in the local community.

Under the direction of Mark Rotter, PE, staff from our offices in Carson City and Reno, supported this exciting project by providing site improvement plans, construction staking, utility agreements and as-builts to help get The Greenhouse Project up and running.

Since its beginnings, The Greenhouse has met or exceeded its goal of producing 400 pounds of produce each month and has far exceeded its original goal of having at least 200 students participating in the vocational/educational programs.

Our Lombard Team!

Over two evenings in November, Manhard Consulting associates from our Vernon Hills and Lombard offices and their family members volunteered at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Staff members worked together to pack approximately 5,500 pounds of bulk granola, instant breakfast packs and other food items in ready-to-go boxes. More than 1,800 boxes were prepared for our neighbors in the greater Chicago area that suffer from food insecurity.

“My goal in arranging this volunteer event was to share a fun and meaningful family tradition with my co-workers,” said Tim Murphy, survey manager for Manhard Consulting. “All those who came and worked together left with a very a positive feeling knowing that their efforts will make a difference in the lives of others. I hope to make this an annual event!”

CANstruction Chicago

Manhard Consulting joined forces with Myefski Architects to form Team Ready-Set-Go Fight Hunger (2016) and Team Kung Fu CAN-da (2015) for CANstruction Chicago! CANstruction is the largest one-day food drive that benefits the Greater Chicago Food Depository(GCFD). For the annual design and build competition, canned foods become the building materials for our creative structure.

All funds raised and canned foods purchased go directly to the GCFD to assist in their fight to end food insecurity for more than 812,00 men, women and children in the greater Chicagoland area. Our goal…No 1 Goes Hungry!

Career Exploration Day

Each year, in partnership with the College of Lake County, Purdue University and the University of Illinois, Manhard Consulting hosts onsite Career Exploration Days at our corporate offices in Vernon Hills, Illinois. This is an opportunity for budding engineering students to meet with professional engineers, and explore their interests in engineering, land surveying, auto CAD and landscape architecture.

Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing is a unique, academically motivating activity that allows students to see how their studies apply to the real world of engineering. They shadow a professional engineer through a normal workday, and discover firsthand how theory and practice are related. This program is designed to provide important reference points for motivated students who are considering a career in engineering:

  • Time is spent exploring the culture of the firm, providing a baseline for future job searches.
  • Professional engineers spend time discussing on-the-job experiences and allow students to observe them in their daily activities.
  • Contacts are maintained after the shadow day, providing opportunities for networking and mentoring.

Assisting Local Community Associations

After over 3 years of adapting, changing, growing and evolving, the Westside Community Improvement Association in Humboldt County, California jumped over a hurdle most would have considered impossible. They now own Jefferson School as part of their Community Revitalization Project.

To show our support of this grassroots community intiative, Manhard Consulting advised and guided the Westside Community Improvement Association by providing site plans, facilitating meetings with City Planning and assisting with the conditional use permitting timeline and cost estimating. In addition, our staff advised and mentored the WCIA through the CEQA process.

Search and Rescue Training Support

Local fire departments in municipalities across the country train constantly to prepare for natural disasters and terrorist events. Manhard Consulting is proud to support this important work, and worked with the Oakbrook Terrace Fire Protection District and the City of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, to provide valuable search-and-rescue training involving a full-scale simulation of a collapsed building. The building, slated for demolition, was vacated per the owner’s schedule, and with the owner’s approval, was prepared for the training exercise. Utilities were disconnected, demolition permits were revised, and the needs of contractors and jurisdictional entities were coordinated. The vacant building was populated with full-weight rescue mannequins marked with various injuries. A section of the building was then brought down, triggering dispatch calls and emergency response teams, who responded as though to an actual incident. Local (Fire District), regional (MABAS Division 12), and State (MABAS IL TF-1) response teams were involved in the simulation, which was modeled after typical disaster response protocol.

Food Drives

Our Illinois offices celebrate St. Patrick’s Day each year with a food drive to help needy families in the local community. Donated items are collected at our Vernon Hills and Lombard, Illinois, offices, and green baskets containing non-perishable foods, household supplies and personal care items are delivered to nearby food shelters. Manhard Consulting associates took it upon themselves to organize this grassroots effort.

Toys 4 Tots

In conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, Manhard Consulting sponsors onsite drives to donate new, unwrapped toys in December each year. The U.S. Marine Corps distributes these toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the local community.
